    • Ely Warren Wyman 1916 - 2006 GREENFIELD- Ely Warren Wyman, 90, of 316 Log Plain Road, died Sunday, July 2, 2006. Ely was born in Blandford, MA on January 26, 1916 to Warren Wesley Wyman and Eva (Robbins) Wyman. He attended Westfield schools and graduated from Westfield High School in 1934. Ely married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Harriet Aschenbach, on June 27, 1936. Ruth and Ely had two sons, Warren Wesley and Charles Ely. Ruth predeceased him in 2003. Ely, a member of Local No. 98, first became an operating engineer for Lane Construction Co. In 1939 his father started W.W. Wyman Construction and Ely worked there until World War II, when the business closed. He then went to Syracuse, NY to assist in building runways for bombers until the war ended and the family business could resume. He and Ruth owned several trailer homes to move from construction job to construction job until the boys were of school age and they bought their first home at 126 Maple St. in Greenfield. In 1957, they moved to 316 Log Plain Road where Ely lived until his death. Here he fostered some interesting hobbies. At one time, Ely had as many as 15 beehives. He was a member of the local beekeepers' association and sold some of his honey. Also, he was a Ham Radio Operator with the handle 'K1PCW' and talked to his radio buddies each night up until his death. In 1958, Ely's father retired from W.W. Wyman Construction and Ely was Assistant Treasurer and in charge of equipment maintenance until his retirement in 1972. He then worked for his friend Henry Wing at Chauncy Wing & Sons for a short time followed by working at Greenfield Farmers' Exchange as a mechanic in the lawn mower repair shop. For a time Ely also conducted a saw sharpening business at his home. Ely is known in the local community for his participation in old car clubs, especially Yankee Motor Club where he showcased his 1921 Nash which he had purchased and restored. Ely was very proud of the fact that the Nash was the only vehicle to be driven in the 200th and 250th Greenfield Anniversary parades. In the 90s he added a 1967 Chevrolet Impala to his collection. Ely leaves his sons, Warren W. of Greenfield and Warren's wife, Bernadette and Charles E. of Norwich, VT and Riverside, CA and Charles' wife, Carol. He leaves his beloved grandchildren who remember him fondly as 'Gramp,' Tom Wyman of Greenfield, MA, Mindy Wyman Horgan of Cincinnati, OH, Marc Wyman of Denver, CO and Kristin Wyman of New York City. He also leaves six great-grandchildren, Justin, Jordan and Jocelyn Wyman and Eddie, Brady and Ruby Horgan. Ely also leaves a devoted and loving caretaker, Mary Seaman, and a loyal dog, Taffy. Calling hours will be at the Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, Greenfield, on Thursday, July 6, 2006, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral will be at Second Congregational Church in Greenfield on Friday, July 7, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ely's memory may be made to: Holy Trinity School, Beacon St., Greenfield, MA or Second Congregational Church, Court Square, Greenfield, MA. Burial will be in Green River Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
