  • Notes
    • Ruth was born in Manton, California. This town borders on Tehama County and Shasta County. I could not find death records for her father in either county. I was not able to get Ruth's birth records through county records, but was able to obtain a copy of a "Delayed Birth Record" for Ruth which was available via the State of California in Sacramento. This record had her birth listed in Shasta County.

My grandmother Ruth loved wild flowers. She knew the names of many wild flowers and knew birds and could identify birds by their bird call. We used to pick pussy willows and poppies together. We made a wild flower book with pressed wild flowers that we collected. They were all labeled. When young she had a horse named Dolly that was a dapple gray. She rode horses. She had painted china (ceramics) with flowers on the design. I have one of these plates that is blue with poppies painted on it.

Ruth went to Normal School now called State University in Chico, California. She got her teaching certificate and taught for eight years before she got married. The rules in the early 1900's did not allow women who married to teach, so her marriage ended her career. She gave birth to Harriet May 16, 1922. When Harriet was only two, Ruth came down with tuberculosis and was put in a sanitarium in Colfax. Harriet remembers her being ill for about 4 1/2 years. Harriet and her father Clifford lived with Ruth's mother Mary "Emma" Taylor Randall while her mother was hospitalized. Ruth recovered and came home. But this did affect her health for the rest of her life.

Harriet was born in the Lexington St. home in Santa Clara where her grandmother Mary Emma Taylor lived. Her family lived with her grandmother until Harriet was 15.

A booklet that Ruth put together for Emma Taylor shows the picture of a family home at 1579 Hamilton Ave. in San Jose, California in January 3, 1943. Ruth's daughter (my mother) Harriet Adelia Johns Johnson came to live here when I (Karen Adelia Johnson Johnsen) was born and lived for awhile when Harrill was in the service and stationed in Amarillo, Texas. Harriet writes that this Hamilton St. home is where they lived when she got married. When Karen was born they were living in the Lincoln Ave. Apartment.

      Ruth was a tow-head blond.

Ruth Taylor and Clifford Johns got married on June 30, 1920 in Santa Clara, CA. Etta Taylor was the Maid of Honor. She was the daughter of Uncle Ralph and Aunt Dottie Taylor. She died young. Uncle Milton Johns (Clifford's brother) was the best man. The wedding was in Uncle John Taylor's back yard in Santa Clara, California.

The family had their home in Manton, but also had a small home in Chico when Ruth was going to college there at the Chico Normal School to become a teacher. Ruth's brother John also went there the first year it was open and he was President of the first graduating class at Chico. I have photo of him in choir at Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo where he went next.

Harriet has a plate that she painted that has pink and blue daisies.
